Mercury Displacement Relays / Contactors are ideally suited for use with electric heaters or any other rapid switching application. We also carry the H Series for Inductive Loads. (See Other Blog) The below contactors are for 35 amp loads, single or three phase resistive loads. Part number with a -18 are the same as the below. The -18 was an option for a metal strap in lieu of plastic. The plastic is no longer available so all units are in a sense the -18 units.

Note to specifying engineer: In order to specify Meltric DECONTACTOR Series plugs and receptacles, include one or all of the items below in your job specification. The items in bold are exclusive to Meltric Decontactors and thus should be included in the specification wherever practical to avoid substitution of pin and sleeve or twist type devices.

Plugs and receptacles must be listed to UL Subject 2682 'Switch Rated Plugs and Receptacles.' (Alternate for Canada: Plugs and receptacles must be CSA listed to UL Subject 2682 'Switch Rated Plugs and Receptacles').
Plugs and receptacles must have constant pressure butt-contacts with solid silver-nickel tips. Pin and sleeve contacts are not permitted.
Receptacles must have dead front construction: live parts must be inaccessible to thin tool or wire.
Plugs and receptacles must be able to close at least once on a conditional short-circuit current of 65,000A. (Short circuit testing should be performed with RK1 current limiting fuses sized at 400% of the highest full load motor ampacity associated with the device).
Plugs and receptacles must incorporate an integral switching mechanism to ensure the load is broken before the plug is removed from the receptacle.

Lainate, March 2011 – Carlo Gavazzi Automation – the international electronics Group with activities in the design, manufacture and marketing of electronic equipment, launches PA18, the new range of M18 Powerful Photoelectric Sensors.
The PA18 is a new series of cost-effective sensors perfectly tailored to automation applications with a good price/performance ratio. Offered in a compact M18 threaded ABS housing, this new sensor series is a space saving solution, available in both axial (straight) and radial (90° rightangled)versions. The PA18 is fitted with a new smart, cost saving accessory which allows quick and easy wall mounting and setup from 1 to 4.5mm. Thanks to the built-in microprocessor, the new M18 powerful photoelectric sensors guarantee advanced filtering and detection, ensuring secure and flexible customized solutions. This sensor has been designed in order to avoid false detection caused by lighting or electromagnetic interference, thus reducing system maintenance while increasing application uptime. Furthermore, due to the efficient aspherical lens design, the PA18 sensors benefit from a longer sensing distance as well as high-speed detection.
These new devices are distinguished by their reliability under the harshest cleaning conditions. The PA18 range can resist water pressure up to 100 bar and cleaning agents and disinfectants, complying with the requirements set out by ECOLAB, IP67, IP69K.

Gavazzi Solid State Contactors

Carlo Gavazzi is launching the REC Series 3-phase Solid State Contactors and Reversing Contactors. The REC Series is twenty times more durable than equivalent mechanical contactors and succeeds in handling high frequency switching.

The REC Series is comprised of a 3-pole non-reversing version with three switched phases or a 3-pole non-reversing and reversing versions with two switched phases. The first solution eliminates direct connection from the power supply to motor, while the second one maintains the same performance level while providing relevant cost reduction. The REC is mechanically compatible with Carlo Gavazzi’s CGT-22 line of bimetallic overload modules, by means of a plastic adapter.

The REC Series is cUL listed as a motor starter and it’s main technical features include:

In addition to competitive pricing, the REC Series assures substantial savings, as it reduces system downtime and maintenance costs. The solid state contactors are provided with a 1,600 Vp blocking voltage option that enhances their surge current ratings.

REC is an electronic contactor intended to replace the tradi- tional mechanical counterpart used to switch three phase motors. The range includes 2 and 3 phase switching ver- sions up to 4kW and 600Vrms. Options with high surge cur- rent and I2t for fusing purposes are also available.

The relay switches instantaneously upon application of the control voltage to emulate mechanical relay operation. A covered heatsink resolves any issues with regards to cables running close to the heatsink and eliminates the need for protective earth cabling. The product can be mounted on DIN-rail or on a panel. Note: Specifications stated at 25°C unless specified.

The PLMU Series continuously measures the voltage of each of the three phases to provide protection for 3-phase motors and sensitive loads. Its microcontroller senses under and overvoltage, voltage unbalance, phase loss, and phase reversal. Protection is provided even when regenerated voltages are present. Universal voltage operation and standard base connection allows the PLMU to replace hundreds of competitive part numbers.

The LLC5 provides dual probe conductive liquid level control in a convenient octal plug-in package. Models are available for fixed fill or drain operation. Isolated, pulsed DC voltage on the probes prevents electrolytic plating. Less than 1 mA of current is used to sense the presence of conductive liquid between the probes and common. On adjustable units, the sensitivity adjustment eliminates false tripping caused by floating debris and foaming agents.

Fire Shield for College Students ~ PROTECTION from Dorm fires

Fire Shield is a next generation extension cord with built-in intelligence to sense cord damage and shut off the power before a fire can start. No other extension cord has this capability.

Industry statistics indicate there is a cord fire approximately every 6 minutes. The most frequent causes of such fires are short circuits, overloading, damage, and/or misuse of extension cords.

A special shield surrounds each of the insulated conductors of the Fire Shield Extension Cord. The shield is continuously monitored by electronics in the plug head. When a dangerous electrical condition is detected by current leaking to the shield, power is shut off before a fire can start.

Fire Shield differ from GFCI's and ground conductors. Grounded conductors only provide a path to ground. GFCI’s detect ground faults. Neither detects the breakdown in the insulation of a standard extension cord, which can lead to an arcing condition that may start a fire. By utilizing a sensing shield around the insulated Fire Shield conductors combined with intelligent electronics in the plug head, Fire Shield can detect damage in the cord such as series faults (broken and frayed conductors) and parallel faults (insulation damage between the live conductors), and shut off the power before a fire can start.

Unintentional misuse of extension cords is the main reason for cord fires. Cords may be crimped, pinched, frayed, overloaded, overheated, or just worn out. Any of these conditions can lead to an extension cord fire. Fire Shield can detect any leakage currents from these conditions and shut off power before a fire can occur.

The cord fire protection is a function of the special shield and relates to the Fire Shield extension cord only.

Fire Shiled should be used anywhere you use standard extension cords or power strips; in children’s rooms, pet areas, with space heaters, electric blankets, waterbeds, etc. Children and pets have been known to bite or chew electrical cords. Fire Shield, with its built-in intelligence may provide protection in these circumstances. Fire Shield Safety Extension Cords should also be used during the holidays with Christmas trees and other holiday decorations because of the tendency to overload extension cords.

Standard surge protectors only provide protection against power surges, which is important. However, standard surge protectors do not provide cord fire prevention. TRC has recently introduced a next generation line of Fire Shield Surge Protectors that not only protects against power surges, but also provides cord fire prevention.

Fire Shield cords are now required at many colleges as the only power strip allowed in college dorms. This is due to students overloading the strips, or tacking the cords to walls or pinching the cords between doors or around corners. All these issues can and will cause fires.

The SSAC TRDU Series is a versatile universal time delay relay with 21 selectable single and dual functions. The dual functions replace up to three timers required to accomplish the same function. Both the function and the timing range are selectable with switches located on the face of the unit. Two LED's indicate input voltage and output status. This device offers full 10 A isolated relay output contacts in either SPDT or DPDT. The TRDU replaces hundreds of part numbers, thereby, reducing your stock inventory requirements.

The SSAC PLM Series continuously measures the voltage of each of the three phases. It separately senses Undervoltage, Voltage Unbalance (including Phase Loss), and Phase Reversal. Protection is assured during periods of large average voltage fluctuations, or when regenerated voltages are present. Both Delta and Wye systems can be monitored; no connection to neutral is required. 380 V AC and 480 V AC units are encapsulated.

Operation

The output relay is energized and the LED glows when all voltages are acceptable and the phase sequence is correct. Under and unbalanced voltages (including phase loss) must be sensed for a continuous trip delay period before the relay and the LED are de-energized. Re-energization is automatic upon correction of the fault condition. The output relay will not energize if a fault condition is sensed as power is applied.

The SSAC TDR Series of time delay relays are comprised of digital circuitry and a separate oscillator to provide high accuracy and stability. The ON and OFF delays are selected by means of ten binary switches, which allow the setting of the desired delay the first time and every time. Full 10 A isolated DPDT output contacts.

Operation

Upon application of input voltage, the output relay is energized and the ON time begins. At the end of the ON time, the output de-energizes and the OFF time begins. At the end of the OFF time, the output relay is energized and the cycle repeats as long as input voltage is applied. The OFF time may be the first delay in recycling timers. Reset: Removing input voltage resets the output and time delays, and returns the sequence to the first delay.

Fenwal controls and Barksdale manufacture mechanical temperature control devices. The switches are bi-metal or liquid filled switches that use expansion and contraction to cause the switching. This type of mechanism can be extremely accurate but lacks in displaying the temperature. In todays computerized/automated world this type of control tends to be used for over temperature control or alarm as opposed to the process control point.

Barksdale manufactures liquid filled switches, both for Hazardous areas and normal areas. The switches can be either local or remote mount. They can sense temperatures up to 600 degrees F.

Local mount type temperature switches are installed in the pipe or vessel. In this type of sensor, the filling fluid surrounds the bellows. A negative temperature change forces the fluid to contract - expanding the bellows to actuate the switch.

Remote bulb and capillary type temperature switches allow the switch enclosure to be placed up to 25 feet from the media. These models use a bulb and capillary sensing device which may be ordered in standard six and 12 foot lengths. Extra lengths up to 25 feet are available. Six and 12 foot sensors can be copper or stainless steel with or without protective spiral-wound armor. The 25 foot lengths are armored stainless steel only.

Should I order split core or solid core CT's? What's the difference?
Solid Core
Solid core Current Transformers (CTs) look like donuts with wires attached. These ring-shaped devices slip over the power lines and measure the electrical current flowing through the line. The CT "secondary" wires connect to the meter, facilitating power and energy calculations.
Solid core CTs are very accurate (0.3% maximum error), small in size, and inexpensive. However, power must be turned off and the circuit opened, generally at a circuit breaker, so that the solid core CT can be slipped over the power line. After installation the power wire must be reconnected to close the electrical circuit. Installation usually only takes a minute or two per CT.
Split Core
Split core CTs can be taken apart, or ‘split' into halves, which negates the need to turn power off and open the circuit during installation. This saves a little installation time, and for critical loads that cannot be switched off, split core CTs are a must. However, split core CTs are more expensive, bulkier, and not as accurate as solid core CTs.

Carlo Gavazzi has announced the launch of the REC Series of 3-phase Solid State Contactors and Reversing Contactors. The REC Series is twenty times more durable than equivalent mechanical contactors and succeeds in handling high frequency switching. The REC Series is comprised of a 3-pole non-reversing version with three switched phases or a 3-pole non-reversing and reversing versions with two switched phases. The first solution eliminates direct connection from the power supply to motor, while the second one maintains the same performance level while providing relevant cost reduction. The REC is mechanically compatible with Carlo Gavazzi’s CGT-22 line of bimetallic overload modules, by means of a plastic adapter.

REC is an electronic contactor intended to replace the traditional mechanical counterpart used to switch three phase motors. The range includes 2 and 3 phase switching versions up to 4kW and 600Vrms.

Parker Fluid Control Division, manufacturers of the Skinner and Gold Ring lines of solenoid valves and the Sinclair Collins line of process control valves, has introduced an integrated coil for its Series 204 and 304 solenoid valves. Featuring easy installation, the integrated coil is the latest in the division's list of flexible production options for these small yet powerful solenoid valves.

The patent-pending NEMA 4X coil with rotating conduit hub permits easy installation. The valve lines also include interchangeable AC and DC coils as well as a tab coil for flexible production possibilities. Both the Series 204 and 304 also feature a complete line of high-temperature watertight coil designs to meet the most demanding environmental conditions.

The Series 204 (two-way) and the Series 304 (three-way) are available as normally closed and normally open valves. Maximized flow rates are delivered through orifice sizes ranging from 1/32" to 5/32". Additionally, the valve line is manufactured with 1/8" port size (NPT) connections.

The new product lines offer a family of direct-acting solenoid valves for air and liquid (including light oil) applications. These valves meet virtually all of today's commercial, industrial, mobile, instrumentation and medical market needs. State-of-the-art performance characteristics ensure a long life and maximized pressure ratings. Economy models are available for less demanding applications.

The integrated coil has been evaluated by Underwriters Laboratories and complies with the RoHS (Restrictions of Hazardous Substances) standard under the European Directive 2002/95/EC.
