Process Ovens Over 40 years Old

Safety Updates for Older Ovens.

Most Process ovens made over 40 years ago did not include an excess temperature controller or separate heating element contactors to protect the oven from overheating if the main temperature controller or contactors fail.
Any ovens like this should not be used until this safety equipment is installed.  Failure to install this safety equipment could result in the oven overheating and a fire that could result in oven damage, loss of the product load, building damage and injury to personnel.

A field kit to add the excess temperature controller and separate contractors should be ordered from the MFG.

The excess temperature controller and separate contactors are now standard equipment on all Grieve ovens.  Also standard is a recirculating blower airflow safety switch to shut down the oven heat if the recirculating blower fails.  This is a pressure differential switch that senses the pressure created when the blower wheel is turning.  This switch protects the oven heating elements by preventing them from heating when air is not being recirculated over them.  A field kit for installation of the recirculating blower airflow safety switch should be purchased from the oven MFG.

When installing new safety equipment it can be a good idea to add other new electronics to the oven for better performance.  New electronics could be a digital temperature controller, programmable digital temperature controller, new thermocouples or a digital timer.  Grieve can provide a field kit to add a digital temperature controllers as well as and a field kit for a digital shut down timer. For electric Ovens new elements can be ordered as well along with pin and sleeve disconnect switches for added electrical safety for personnel. We can provide Gas meters for gas ovens to measure gas flow at the oven and shut the oven down in a dangerous situation.

Grieve's field kits include installation instructions, wiring diagram showing items to be removed, wiring diagram showing items to be added and revised wiring diagram for your records.  Our kits will be based on how the ovens were constructed when they left our factory.  If there have been changes made to the oven in the field they will not be included in our revised wiring diagram.

Grieve will provide all parts except for standard wire, conduit and conduit fittings.  These items are better provided in the field as necessary to connect the components being added.  Conduit would only be required for the air flow safety switch as the other items are mounted in the oven control panel.

Please contact Anderson-Bolds with the oven serial number, job # and model number all of which can be found on the name plate of the oven.  We can also provide new wiring schematics for old ovens and instruction manuals.  Grieve and Anderson-Bolds want our products to be operated in the safest manner possible.

Meltric Decontactor DS20 Repair / Spare Parts

Meltric Decontactors and Industrial plugs can be rebuilt as all the parts are replaceable.

The Meltric DS20 series of Industrial plugs and Receptacles are a 20 amp device with a Polyester housing and silver contacts. The Meltric DeContactor meets NEC codes and NFPA 70E Safety guidelines.  Below are the spare parts.  Note that the voltage and phasing are integral to the spare parts to the the parts are correct.  A 120 volt device will not fit into a 480 rated device. So when picking a part, please pick the correct voltage part or let us know the phasing and voltage.
the last three digits of the receptacle or inlet part number is the key.

Look for your part below or use our Contact Form and Anderson-Bolds will email a quote.

Meltric DSN Spec

Anderson-Bolds and Meltric present the DSN series of deContactor. Safety First.

Detailed spec for MELTRIC DECONTACTOR Series Switch Rated Plugs & Receptacles

Note to specifying engineer: In order to specify Meltric DECONTACTOR Series plugs and receptacles, include one or all of the items below in your job specification. The items in bold are exclusive to Meltric Decontactors and thus should be included in the specification wherever practical to avoid substitution of pin and sleeve or twist type devices.

  1. Plugs and receptacles must be listed to UL Subject 2682 'Switch Rated Plugs and Receptacles.' (Alternate for Canada: Plugs and receptacles must be CSA listed to UL Subject 2682 'Switch Rated Plugs and Receptacles').
  2. Plugs and receptacles must have constant pressure butt-contacts with solid silver-nickel tips. Pin and sleeve contacts are not permitted.
  3. Receptacles must have dead front construction: live parts must be inaccessible to thin tool or wire.
  4. Plugs and receptacles must be able to close at least once on a conditional short-circuit current of 65,000A. (Short circuit testing should be performed with RK1 current limiting fuses sized at 400% of the highest full load motor ampacity associated with the device).
  5. Plugs and receptacles must incorporate an integral switching mechanism to ensure the load is broken before the plug is removed from the receptacle.
  6. Plug and receptacle wire terminals must be spring-assisted to prevent loosening due to conductor yielding, shocks, vibrations or thermal cycling.
  7. The minimum environmental rating of plugs and receptacles must be NEMA 3R (DS Series), NEMA 4X and IP 66+67 (DSN Series), or IP67 (DB Series).
  8. Ingress protection must be achieved automatically when the plug is fully inserted into the receptacles, without additional manual operation (except DB Series).
  9. Plugs and receptacles must have a system of different keying positions in order to discriminate between circuits or incompatible operating voltages or frequencies.
  10. Plugs and receptacles installed outdoor must be able to withstand UV radiation.
  11. Plugs and receptacles shall be Meltric Decontactor Series or equal.
