VERTICAL DETECT-A-FIRE-UNITS
Fenwal Vertical detectors are designed for use in both "ordinary" or "hazardous" locations. For "ordinary" use, they may be mounted to any approved junction box with 7/8" diameter opening by using 1/2-14 NPT mounting nuts. The device may be wired in or out of conduit, depending on local preference and codes. Four lead wires are provided on normally open vertical units (that close on temperature rise), per UL requirement, to facilitate supervision of system wiring. Instruments are Underwriters Laboratory and Underwriters Laboratory of Canada listed and Factory Mutual (FM) approved for hazardous locations, when mounted in a suitable fitting.

  • Hazardous Locations: For Class I, Division 1 and 2 locations install the D-A-F Unit in a listed explosion-proof enclosure with a minimum thread engagement of five full turns. No non-conductive material is to be placed on the threaded joint of the D-A-F Unit or in the listed explosion-proof enclosure. For Division 2 locations assure that a protective ground terminal is provided in the listed explosion-proof enclosure when flexible metal conduit is used.


  • Non-Hazardous Outdoor Locations: Mount the D-A-F in a Listed NEMA Type 3 outlet box, cover and conduit, with 1/2- 14 NPT threads and a minimum thread engagement of 5 full turns. Use pipe plugs with RTV silicone rubber sealant, a rubber gasket and self- sealing screws to attach the cover, and PTFE thread sealtape on the D-A-F threads. For additional requirements consult the local fire department, the National Electric Code and/or the local authority having jurisdiction in the area.


As part of the recommended maintenance procedure, perform a visual inspection of the Fenwan DETECT-A-FIRE® unit in accordance with NFPA 72 guidelines. During the visual inspection, verify that the sensing shell is free of dents, dings or build up of foreign matter of any kind. If the shell is dented or shows signs of any physical damage, replace the unit immediately. If a build up of dust has accumulated on the unit, clean the unit with a vacuum or soft dry cloth. If the shell has been painted, replace the unit. Be careful not to damage the unit in any way.
Note: Some units are factory coated. Do not confuse these with units that were painted by the owners.

DESCRIPTION
The Heat Detector Assembly includes part number 17343-124
Heat Detector and Field wire Terminal housing. The assembly is
available in two orientations: Right as part number 03-17343-
127; Left as part number 03-017343-126. The internal connections
are the same in both styles. For additional details on
the Heat Detector, refer to the Operation and Maintenance

IECEx Conditions of Certification:
The enclosure shall be installed to a flat rigid surface
using the mounting means provided.
All conductors/cables shall be suitable for a temperature
of 200°C.
All cable/conduit fittings shall be certified equivalent
to the marking on the apparatus and have a
minimum IP54 rating.
Not more than one single or multiple strand lead
shall be connected into either side of any terminal,
unless multiple conductors have been joined in a
suitable manner, e.g. two conductors into a single
insulated crimped boot lace ferrule.
Leads connected to the terminal shall be insulated
for a minimum 125V and the insulation shall extend
to within 1mm of the metal terminal throat.
All terminal screws, used or unused, shall be tightened
down.













The Fire Detectors come in 5 temperature set points.
140ºF, 325ºF, 425ºF, 600ºF and 725ºF
The Detectors are color coded for Temperature by bands on the tip of the detector shell 17343-124
No Band is 140ºF
Red Band is 325ºF
Green Band is 425ºF
Orange Band is 600ºF
Gray Band is 725ºF




























INSTALLATION

Refer to the following steps for proper installation of the Heat
Detector assembly:
Recommendation: For best support, use rigid conduit when
installing the heat detector field wiring.
1. After proper mounting of the Heat Detector Housing,
unscrew the enclosure cover, exposing the field wire terminals.
2. Ensure the connections between the Heat Detector and
Terminal Block have not become loose during shipping,
tighten as required.
3. Strip 0.3" (7.6mm) of the insulation from the ends of
Input connection A & B.
4. Insert field wire through port.
5. With a flat tip .14 (3.6mm) screw driver, loosen Input connection
A & B set screw.
6. Insert the exposed end of input connection A and B into
the terminal block as shown.
7. Tighten locking screws hand tight plus 1/4 turn.
8. Thread Heat Detector cover hand tight and tighten.
9. Secure cover in place by tightening the locking set screw
located within the cover with a 1/16 (4.2mm) hex “Allen”
wrench.

Fenwal Brass Thermoswitches

Fenwal has been controlling temperature since the 1930's with their unique and extremely accurate Thermoswitch temperature controller. The Thermoswitch can sense and switch at .1 degree F.  The Thermoswitch is a bi metal switch with the outer shell expanding and contracting which causes the contacts to make and break. The switch probes are made of brass or stainless steel.  The Brass switches have a range of -100F to 400F while the Stainless switches have a range of -100F to 600F.

As of January 1, 2018 the brass switches have been discontinued and leave the Stainless steel switches as the only choices. The accuracy of the stainless steel is the same as the brass.

Fenwal 17000-0 Sereis THERMOSWITCHES

Anderson-Bolds Stocks Fenwal 17000-0 series Temperature switches.

NOTE: The Fenwal Brass THERMOSWITCHES have been discontinued.
The Replacement Stainless Steel Switches are still available.
Besides being Stainless Steel the switches have a temperature range of -100 to 600ºF.
The Brass switches went up to 400ºF. 
All other aspects are identical.

The Fenwal THERMOSWITCH developed by Dr. Wall and Mr. Fenn in the 1930's is still used to day for accurate Temperature control for commercial and industrial applications.  The THERMOSWITCH used the method of dis-similar metals to measure temperature. The outer shell and interior struts expand and contract at different rates and by use of a spring the switch can be adjusted to require more or less expansion for different temperature settings.

The Fenwal Series 17000-0 is a simple cartridge style thermostat, 5/8 inch in diameter and 3.72 inches long.
It is made of brass or stainless steel, the brass version has a range of -100 to 400F  and the Stainless Steel has a range of -100 to 600F.

The Fenwal 17000-0 series also has  the following versions:

Fenwal HEX Head style with a Hex nut and 1/2 inch NPT pipe thread mounting. 17100-0
The Stainless Version is 17102-0.

The Fenwal Block Head style for adding certain Modifications.  17200-0
The Stainless Version is 17202-0.

The Flange Mount with Block head for easy mounting.  17300-0
The Stainless Version is 17302-0.

The Fenwal 17800-0 with terminal box, NPT threads and knob and dial. 
The Stainless Version is 17802-0.

The Fenwal 18000-0 series with double headed fittings (coupling head).

Fenwal Detect-A-Fire switches

DETECT-A-FIRE units by Kidde-Fenwal are the "heart" of many Fire Protection Systems. These highly reliable devices have been a standard of the industry for over 45 years. Many thousands of these units are now in use controlling the release of extinguishants such as clean agents, C02, water, or dry chemicals. In some systems the device is used as an ALARM device, to sense overheat or fire, and alert personnel. In other systems, it is used as a RELEASE device, to sense fire and actuate fire attack systems.

DETECT-A-FIRE units by Fenwal Controls have met with wide acceptance because they are designed with RATE COMPENSATION. This provides a unique advantage over both fixed temperature and rate-of-rise types of detectors because only the DETECT-A-FIRE unit accurately senses the surrounding air temperature regardless of the fire growth rate. At precisely the predetermined danger point, the system is activated. Fixed temperature detectors must be completely heated to alarm temperature and therefore a disastrous lag in time may occur with a fast rate fire. Rate-of-rise devices, on the other hand, are triggered by the rate of increase in ambient temperature and are subject to false alarms caused by harmless, transient thermal gradients such as the rush of warm air from process ovens.


The secret of the unit's sensitivity is in the design (Figure 1). The outer shell is made of a rapidly expanding alloy which closely follows changes in surrounding air temperature. The inner struts are made of a lower expanding alloy. Designed to resist thermal energy absorption and sealed inside the shell, the struts follow temperature changes more slowly. A slow rate fire (Figure 2) will heat the shell and struts together. At the "set point," the unit will trigger, actuating the alarm or releasing the extinguishant. A transient rush of warm air up to 40F/min. may expand the shell, but not enough to trigger the unit. By ignoring transient warm air excursions, the DETECT-A-FIRE unit virtually eliminates false alarms prevalent with rate-of-rise devices. If a fast rate fire (Figure 3) starts, the shell will expand rapidly. The struts will close, actuating the alarm or releasing the agent. The faster the fire rate of growth, the sooner the DETECT-A-FIRE unit will react.



HORIZONTAL DETECT-A-FIRE-UNITS
Horizontal detectors are designed for locations where appearance is a factor. The attractive, functional design lends physical protection of the unit while making it suitable for commercial, industrial, mercantile and public buildings,institutions and ships in non-hazardous locations (those classified as "ordinary" under the National Electric Code). Flush mounted units are designed to fit standard 4" octagonal electrical boxes and surface mounting units are designed to mount directly on ceilings or on 4" electrical junction boxes. Canadian Electrical Codes requires mounting only to an electrical junction box.

Temperature Controls - Mechanical




Fenwal controls and Barksdale manufacture mechanical temperature control devices. The switches are bi-metal or liquid filled switches that use expansion and contraction to cause the switching. This type of mechanism can be extremely accurate but lacks in displaying the temperature. In todays computerized/automated world this type of control tends to be used for over temperature control or alarm as opposed to the process control point.


Barksdale manufactures liquid filled switches, both for Hazardous areas and normal areas. The switches can be either local or remote mount. They can sense temperatures up to 600 degrees F.

Local mount type temperature switches are installed in the pipe or vessel. In this type of sensor, the filling fluid surrounds the bellows. A negative temperature change forces the fluid to contract - expanding the bellows to actuate the switch.
Remote bulb and capillary type temperature switches allow the switch enclosure to be placed up to 25 feet from the media. These models use a bulb and capillary sensing device which may be ordered in standard six and 12 foot lengths. Extra lengths up to 25 feet are available. Six and 12 foot sensors can be copper or stainless steel with or without protective spiral-wound armor. The 25 foot lengths are armored stainless steel only.
Barksdale's MT1H & T2H Series Temperature Switches provide unmatched performance, quality & reliability in a mechanical thermostat.     Based on the differential expansion of metals principle, an increase in temperature causes the stainless steel outer case of the Surface Mounting THERMOSWITCH® controller to expand at a greater rate than the internal bridge assembly.
    Because the case is in direct contact with the heated surface, a temperature change is sensed almost instantaneously.
